Abstracts of Recently Discovered Records

The following abstracts of early Virginia wills, have been carefully transcribed from the records in Lexington, Rockbridge County, Bedford City in Bedford County, Manasses in Prince William County, Amherst in Amherst County, Leesburg in Loudoun County, and Rustburg in Campbell County, Virginia.

Prince William County was established in 1730, being taken from King George and Stafford Counties. Bedford County was established in 1753, being taken from Lunenburg County. Loudoun County was established in 1757, being taken from Fairfax County. Amherst County was established in 1761. Rockbridge County was established in 1778, being taken from Augusta County. Campbell County was established in 1784, being taken from Bedford County.

In many of the Virginia counties the court houses were destroyed by fire during the Civil War and the county records were destroyed, either in whole or in part. In Leesburg, Loudoun County, one will book is missing and in Prince William County four books, covering a period of twenty years, are nowhere to be found. In Rockingham County there are neither wills nor deeds prior to 1865, but here I found marriage records and fee books as early as 1774 in a forgotten corner.

In the following alphabetical list of early Virginia wills, a chronological order is preserved in order to show descent or generation, and particular care has been taken to follow the quaint, original spelling of surnames as well as forenames, occurring in the original record.
